One person has died after a mid-air collision between two aircraft near Fredericksburg on Friday.

According to a report from the Aviation Safety Network and various reports on social media, the two airplanes were reportedly participating in a formation flight practice for Veterans Day this week.

One of the pilots reported trouble retracting the plane’s landing gear, then striking a second plane. The second plane crashed near Gillespie County Airport, killing its sole pilot. The victim was identified as Jim Averett in a Facebook post by the Falcon Flight Formation Team.

The pilot of the other plane was able to make an emergency off-airport landing. Both aircraft were single engine Beechcraft Model 35s. The National Transportation Safety Board has confirmed the investigation of the accident.
