San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Thursday a military family of six was found dead in an SUV in a garage at a home in Stone Oak.

McManus said police responded to a welfare check at a home in the 100 block of Red Willow Thursday morning. A friend of one of the residents told police he hadn’t heard from him in a while.

When police entered, they smelled a strong chemical odor and immediately backed out of the house.

McManus said police eventually entered the garage Thursday evening and discovered the family of six dead. The husband and wife were both in their late 30s. Their four children ranged from 11 months to four years old.

McManus said there is evidence that the deaths were not an accident and that suicide was a possibility. He did not elaborate and said the investigation is ongoing. The victims have not been identified.

An emergency alert was sent out around 5 p.m. Thursday to the surrounding area and more than 200 homes were evacuated. A spokesperson for the San Antonio Fire Department said the evacuation alert was accidently sent to a broader area before they were able to specify a perimeter around the house.
