Bandera Road Closed Friday Night To Monday Morning

One of San Antonio’s busiest highway intersections will shutdown beginning Friday night.

Loop 1604 and Bandera Road will be completely closed from 9 p.m. Friday, until 5 a.m. Monday.

The main lanes of the freeway will remain open, but not the intersection below.

The Texas Department of Transportation reports the closure is needed to put the final touches on paving.

TX-DoT advises motorists to avoid the area if possible. Aninteractive map created by the department also tracks road closures in the area.

The intersection features two giant left turn lanes that are diverted away from the main intersection onto Eastbound Loop 1604.

Bandera Road is the main thoroughfare through Helotes.

Andrea Wazir is a public relations specialist for the City of Helotes, and said most local residents realize the road work at the major intersection and along the road is needed to ease traffic congestion in the growing area.

“I think traffic is moving easier than it was before,” she said.  “We are not seeing as many backups right in this area,” Wazir said, referring to a stretch of Bandera close to Helotes City Hall.

This spring, TX-DoT completed major expansion of Loop 1604 at Wiseman, West Military,  Potranco, Marbach and the Loop 1604 overpass at Highway 90. The freeway is now a separated, four-lane highway in those areas.

There are dozens of highway projects underway across the city, but among the largest are:

  • U.S. 281 from Stone Oak to the Bexar-Comal County line
  • I-10 through the east side of the city
  • I-10 on the northwest side of San Antonio and Boerne
