Open Carry Activist Announces Candidacy In State Senate Race

Ryan E. Poppe
CJ Grisham, Executive Director of Open Carry Texas and Republican candidate in SD 24 race
The Republican race to replace veteran Sen. Troy Fraser is in full swing with the list of candidates getting longer and becoming more lively this week.

Gun rights activist CJ Grisham announced his candidacy on Wednesday and says he decided to run after witnessing the squabbles within the Republican super-majority in the Legislature.

“It started with my frustration with what was supposed to be a very conservative Republican majority that was going to pass very conservative legislation and just seeing how difficult that was.  Yes, we had some difficult bills out there, but we shouldn’t have had to fight for it like that,” Grisham said.

Grisham, a veteran Army Sgt. and director of the group Open Carry Texas, is joined in the race by former Lake Travis board member Dr. Dawn Buckingham, Abilene State Rep. Susan King and longtime Bexar County politician Reed Williams.

Senate District 24 encompasses 17 counties, its boundaries run from Abilene in the north down to Bandera County and spreads through parts of Austin and the Hill Country.

Ryan started his radio career in 2002 working for Austin’s News Radio KLBJ-AM as a show producer for the station's organic gardening shows. This slowly evolved into a role as the morning show producer and later as the group’s executive producer.
