Abbott’s announcement came last night following talks he held with Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs at the Governor’s mansion in Austin.

Abbott said he and José Antonio Meade Kuribreña discussed enhancing trade and infrastructure needs between Texas and Mexico.

“We’ve already begun to a very productive conversations and dialogue, talking about ways that build a more productive economic vibrant relationship together.  In furtherance of this I’m very, very proud to have received an invitation to visit Mexico and I have accepted that invitation and I look forward to following up on that very soon,” Abbott said.

Over the past decade, Texas’ relationship with Mexico has been often strained by differences on immigration, combating drug trafficking, trafficking and the release of water from the Rio Grande River to farmers in South Texas.

One of Abbott’s campaign promises before taking office was to maintain a close working relationship with Mexico.
