AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott has set an emergency special election for March 31 to fill Texas House District 124’s vacant seat. Then State Rep. JoséMenéndez won a runoff election last month to replace Sen. Leticia Van de Putte.
Like Menéndez, Van de Putte is a San Antonio Democrat, but left the upper chamber to run for mayor.
The special election will replace Menéndez, who formally moved from the House to the Senate in a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday.
Its winner will finish Menéndez's two-year term.
The legislative session began Jan. 13 but has featured a series of special elections. Some senators left to assume new statewide elected posts, and House members replaced them in the Senate, thus creating more legislative vacancies.
