Melissa Martinez, a kindergarten teacher at Will Rogers Academy in the San Antonio Independent School District, has died after becoming infected with COVID-19.

Rogers Academy Principal Zada Fowler said Martinez will be greatly missed.

"Ms. Martinez was an amazing teacher and genuine person,” Fowler said. “She was passionate about her students, creative beyond measure, and always willing to help anyone in need.  She loved being a teacher and it showed in her smile and beautiful laughter."

Martinez had been a teacher in the district for six years. According to SAISD, she was last on campus during the first week of June.

Rogers Academy staff learned of her death Wednesday, and the district is providing them with counseling.

Martinez is the second confirmed SAISD teacher to die of complications from COVID-19 this summer. Ogden Academy teacher Carmen Canales died July 21.

This is a developing story.
