Bexar County entered into an agreement with the San Antonio Independent School District Tuesday to build a library and parking garage at the Fox Tech campus downtown.
The county will pay for the construction of both, and the district will provide the land.
The 600 space parking garage will be located at SAISD’s new central office currently under construction near the northern end of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park.
The new BiblioTech library will be located across the street on North Flores Street. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said Monday it will be twice the size of the county’s other digital BiblioTech libraries.
“We’ll be able to have a robotics room, a recording studio, a maker’s space, a children’s area, an outdoor science and art area,” Wolff told SAISD trustees before they voted to approve the contract with the county.
Bexar County commissioners gave their final approval to spend nearly $20 million on the projects Tuesday.
According to SAISD Chief Operations Officer Willie Buroughs, the district will pay the county $432,000 a year for the first five years to lease the garage during the day.
“(We’re) very grateful for the county’s willingness to work with us,” Burroughs said. “We didn’t have a solution (for parking).”
Both the parking garage and the library are slated to be completed in 2021. They will be reserved for district use during the day and open to the public on evenings and weekends.
