The San Antonio School for Inquiry and Creativity District will re-open on Monday after being closed last week by the Texas Education Agency.
In a letter to the school superintendent, TEA Commissioner Mike Morath says the north central charter school has committed to meeting requirements he is imposing on background checks and food safety. TEA spokeswoman DeEtta Culbertson says an appointed monitor will be present at the school.
“One thing the commissioner did note in his letter: if the monitor identifies any conditions that present a threat to the health, safety, or welfare of the students at the San Antonio School for Inquiry and Creativity, the operations and funding will again be suspended,” Culbertson said.
The monitor will be Michael Moretta who has been principal and superintendent of several charter school districts.
Last Wednesday, the TEA ordered the school to close after it was discovered criminal background checks were not being completed in accordance with TEA requirements and mold was found in food to be served. The school’s 500 students have been on spring break this week.
