Visivia Poética / Visual Poetics Workshop
Visivia Poética / Visual Poetics Workshop
***Registration is required***
Facilitated by translingual spoken word poet, visual artist, and radio host Alejandra “Mera Mera” Sánchez, Visivia Poética merges poetry, abstract visual art, and community storytelling into an immersive creative experience. Rooted in the Latine/Xicana feminist tradition of autohistoria and inspired by the artistic lineage of poesía visiva and concrete poetry, the workshop centers visuality as an extension of language—a space where memory, emotion, and personal narrative take living form.
Participants are guided through a process that begins with metaphor-rich writing prompts and sensory reflection, then evolves into the creation of abstract visual compositions that embody their poetic voice. Through the integration of color theory, visual symbolism, emotional literacy, and sensory exploration, attendees translate words into shape, rhythm, and hue—transforming language into art.
The workshop culminates in a communal sharing circle, where participants are invited to create within one of Alejandra’s original abstract pieces—geometric, textured compositions designed as positive spaces for poetic play and emotional release. Through this act of co-creation, participants practice metaphor and image-based writing, embodied storytelling, and reflective dialogue, reclaiming the page, the canvas, and the self as sacred ground for creative expression.
