Rooted: Indigenous Art & Stories
This event marks a special double book launch honoring local author Xelena González and illustrator Adriana Garcia, creators of the new picture books Of the Sun and For a Girl Becoming. Their works explore themes of identity, heritage, and transformation, inviting readers of all ages to reflect on how stories shape and strengthen us.
Adding to the day’s magic, artist José Sotelo Yamasaki will present his Lotería Remedios collection, an imaginative re-envisioning of the beloved game that blends visual storytelling with cultural healing traditions. José will also lead a hands-on printmaking activity designed for all ages and skill levels.
Throughout the afternoon, guests can enjoy live art demonstrations, creative workshops, and opportunities to meet the artists in an atmosphere filled with inspiration and connection. Metro Health’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program will offer food demonstrations featuring local ingredients and healthy recipes inspired by the featured Lotería card set.
Bring your family, creativity, and curiosity to this joyful gathering beneath the Árbol de la Vida public art piece. Together, we’ll celebrate the stories that root us and the art that helps us flourish.
