Rainbow Roots: Counterculture, Gay Liberation, and the Transformation of Urban Space, 1960s-1990s
Join the San Antonio Public Library and learn more about our city’s colorful past. Melissa Gohlke, Assistant Archivist at UTSA, and a scholar of San Antonio’s LGBTQIA+ history, will present on the queer, counterculture scene in San Antonio during the 60's and 70's. San Antonio College and the surrounding area became the nexus of the counterculture scene. Mod clothing stores, hip cafes, and head shops served the area’s population of free thinkers. Within this milieu, nascent stirrings of gay liberation made their way into the open as queer women and men claimed space along San Pedro and Main streets. You can attend in person or register online for a Zoom link to view at home. Visit our events calendar at mysapl.org for details and to register.
