Professor Mel Laracey will discuss his book, Informing a Nation: The Newspaper Presidency of Thomas Jefferson. The book examines the newspaper that Thomas Jefferson used during his presidency to promote his political agenda and defend his administration against attacks by his opponents. This was done via editorials and unsigned commentaries published in the paper that were widely understood to be reflecting Jefferson’s views, and that were often written by Jefferson, James Madison, and other high-level officials.
Many of the issues discussed in the paper remain relevant today. Mel Laracey is Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas San Antonio.
