George Veni: How Geology Creates Endangered Cave Species

George Veni: How Geology Creates Endangered Cave Species

Eight endangered species occur in at least 149 caves in Bexar County. Seven similar species, also endangered, occur in at least 255 caves in Travis and Williamson counties. But what makes these species endangered? Geology is a big part of the answer. It also determines where these species live, and why they are limited to these counties.

In this presentation, Dr. Veni will describe how these tiny animals came to live in caves, their resulting evolution, and how geology drove that evolution and is still critically important to the species’ management.
