Gardening Essentials

The third Monday of every month, Gardening Volunteers of South Texas provides 3 hours education in foundational best practices and fundamental information for water-wise gardening.
Classes are open to the public free of cost. Donations made during Gardening Essentials supports the Dr. Tom Harris Scholarship Fund.
These classes include 2 sessions and a 15-minute break.

Gardening Essentials April 20, 2026

Brad Wier, editor of the revised San Antinio Water System Landscaping Guide, will introduce the new book and explain how to use it for the most benefit. Every adult attendee will receive one copy free. Editor will be available to autograph copies beginning at 11:30.

Rose Flores, Director of Eco Centro at San Antonio College, will give an overview of anatomy and physiology of native herbaceous plants and what steps and materials you will need to propagate them. Flores will explain why herbaceous cuttings are the easiest way to propagate plants and the parts of a plant relevant to propagation. Attendees will process a basic cutting they can use at home.
