Dark Rhythms & Deep Roots — Latinidad & British Post-Punk

Dark Rhythms & Deep Roots — Latinidad & British Post-Punk

Join us for a compelling evening with author Richard T. Rodriguez and special guest panelists, as we discuss his book, A Kiss Across the Ocean: Transatlantic Intimacies of British Post-Punk & US Latinidad, exploring the deep, surprising relationship between British post-punk music and Latinx cultural identity.

From Joy Division’s haunting minimalism to Siouxsie and the Banshees’ theatrical goth sound, British post-punk and new wave music struck a powerful chord with generations of Latinos across the Americas. But why does this dark, melancholic music speak so strongly to a community rich in rhythm, warmth, and cultural pride?

Drawing on personal stories, music history, and cultural analysis, Rodriguez uncovers how themes of alienation, identity, resistance, and emotional expression resonate deeply with the diasporic Latinx experience. Whether it’s the introspection of The Cure or the rebellious edge of Bauhaus, these sounds became a soundtrack for belonging and transformation in Chicano, Caribbean, Central, and South American subcultures.

Expect an engaging conversation that blends music, migration, style, and survival — and maybe even a few dancefloor classics.
