A Tale of Two Pianists: Bach and Stride

A Tale of Two Pianists: Bach and Stride

Solo piano concert by William McNalley.

The first part of the program will consist of works from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier along with transcriptions of Bach and his peers by composer-pianists of the Golden Age: Rachmaninoff, Friedman, and Godowsky.

The second half of the program explores an entirely different style. Novelty style piano works of the 1920s and '30s (sometimes called "modern" syncopated works) were the most immediate successors to ragtime. More virtuosic than ragtime, the novelty style was a backbone to the technical approach utilized by the strongest band pianists of the Jazz Age.
