Holiday Video Special Available Starting Dec. 13

AUSTIN, Texas – Nov. 25, 2020 – The holidays may look a little different this year, but KUT and KUTX aren’t letting that get in the way of connecting people from all walks of life through the power of song.

KUT 90.5, Austin’s NPR Station, and KUTX 98.9, The Austin Music Experience, invite the community to kick off the holidays at a virtual Holiday Sing-Along.

Hosted by KUT and KUTX “Pause/Play” podcast co-host Elizabeth McQueen, the 30-minute special features Austin musicians Molly Burch, Gina Chavez, Eimaral Sol and Shinyrib’s Kevin Russell putting their unique spin on some holiday classics, including “Silent Night” and “Sleigh Ride,” and newer songs, such as “Mi Burrito Sabenero” and “Hard Candy Christmas.”

Host Elizabeth McQueen will perform “Mele Kalikimaka,” one of her signature songs, which she performs at the Holiday Sing-Along at the Capitol each year. John Aielli also will make an appearance.

Starting Sunday, Dec. 13, the community can watch the special and download the songbook at singalong.kutx.org. The video and songbook will be available through Dec. 31.

“We’re sad because we can’t sing together in person, but we know we’ll be together again soon,” said KUT and KUTX General Manager Debbie Hiott. “In the meantime, we’ve teamed up with some of our favorite Austin artists to bring good cheer into your home. We hope we can provide you with some family fun.”

The Sing-Along started in the early 1980s when KUT and KUTX’s John Aielli, an accomplished vocalist, gathered with friends and fans to sing carols in the Capitol Rotunda. Over the years, the Sing-Along outgrew the rotunda and moved outside to the Capitol steps, eventually becoming the station’s biggest community event of the year with thousands in attendance.

KUT and KUTX would like to thank Whole Earth Provision Co. and Central Texas Food Bank whose sponsorship help make this event possible.
