There’s an annual program in San Antonio that features music and dance, and all in a historic location.
“Well, we’re having a dance hall series that is going to run through the remainder of that summer.”
That’s band leader Doc Watkins.
“Starting this Wednesday night at the Pearl Brewery in the Stables, and we’re going to do that every Wednesday night from July first all the way through August 26th.”
This is the second year for the Dance Hall series at the historic Pearl Stables.
“It was met with an enthusiastic response so we decided to do it again this year, and to do it bigger and better, so it’s going to be even larger bands and last year it was only two hours, but this year we’re extending it to three.”
Watkins says Texas was once known for its Dance Hall scene, which has faded dramatically.
“Many of those dance halls have now closed down in the last twenty years or so, and so we wanted to help keep that tradition alive and help revive it.”
So every Wednesday night a different band and a different genre of music—jazz and swing to country to Americana and even Conjunto. Bands start early, at six o’clock. And that's by design.
“If you want to go to dinner you can either have an early dinner and dance afterwards, or you can come at the beginning and dance for an hour and then go eat.”
Watkins and his band are playing Wednesday, and then the last night—August 26th. And one last thing. It’s free.
