Artpace’s Springtime Artist in Residence Program is about to end.
“The Artist in Residence Program asks an international artist, a national artists and then a Texas-based artist,” says Texas artist Jessica Mallios, who describes how the program is constructed.
All the artists converge in Artpace’s downtown gallery and studios in January each year. While they live and create there, they are are given eight weeks to develop a specific project for exhibition at the end of their time at Artpace.
"I’m also working a lot faster than I normally would, because of the resources," Mallios states.
She says that the Artist in Residence program makes a huge difference to a practicing artist.
“…overall the real support that you feel is really incredible and it sort of allows for the jumps and sort of risk-taking that maybe you don’t have in your regular studio practice.”
Artists chosen for the residency program are given a large studio space, budget, and substantive staff help to complete their artworks.
"Working that fast has been a surprise, but it’s been a good one," says Mallios.
The public showing of their work will take place at Artpace on Thursday the 20th, and it’s free and open to the public.
