Students in Connecticut want to change the official state insect

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning, I'm Steve Inskeep. While other people focus on the presidential election, students in Connecticut have a campaign of their own. Kids want to throw out the incumbent official state insect, the European praying mantis. The reason why is right there in the name - European. Students want to honor a species native to Connecticut. They've sent lawmakers proposals to replace it with the autumn meadowhawk dragonfly or the spring azure butterfly. Beautiful. It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
