Substance Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorder affects millions of Americans, but treatment options remain limited, and relapse is common. A UT Health San Antonio researcher is studying two unconventional approaches that he hopes could one day be combined into a single, more effective treatment.

The diversion center would focus on low-level offenders who have untreated mental illness, intellectual or developmental disorders, or substance use disorders. The goal would be to ease jail overcrowding while saving taxpayers money and improving outcomes for those who avoid jail.
