Lipan Apache

Attorneys representing the Lipan Native American Church have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review a federal appeals court decision allowing San Antonio to move forward with redevelopment plans at Brackenridge Park that church leaders say would destroy a sacred religious site.

In the beginning, relatives of the people buried in El Cementerio del Barrio de los Lipanes hoped to protect the Lipan Apache burial ground from further decay. Three years later, they’ve created a memorial that helps visitors understand its past — and look to the future.
