The decision by the International Olympic Committee follows last year's McLaren report, which said more than 1,000 Russian athletes were involved in manipulating doping controls.

There was a "systematic and centralised cover up and manipulation of the doping control process" in Russia, an investigation found. The report includes thousands of documents as evidence.

The tennis star was suspended from international competition after testing positive for the banned drug meldonium. She will be eligible to play again beginning in April 2017.

Hundreds of elite endurance athletes were taking the prescription heart drug meldonium until it was banned in January. But a similar heart drug, telmisartan, is still allowed.

"The findings of the report show a shocking and unprecedented attack on the integrity of sport and on the Olympic Games," IOC President Thomas Bach says of a WADA investigation.
