  • 2: Playwright MART CROWLEY. His works were recently re-published in a book, "3 Plays by Mart Crowley" (Alyson Publications). "The Boys in the Band" (1968), is the classic portrait of a gay artist living in New York and was one of the first plays to break the taboo on the portrayal of homosexuality. A revival of "The Boys in the Band" opened in June and the film version is being featured at the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival this summer. CROWELY's other works in the book are "A Breeze from the Gulf" (1974) and "For Reasons that Remain Uncertain" (1994).

  • Today is the 80th anniversary of the first recording of jazz. It was issued on Victor Records, and featured five New Orleans musicians - The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. John McDonough reports on how the raucous music was received at the time, and on the significance of the historic event for the future of recorded jazz.   • Musician and actor Steve Van Zandt. He is the guitarist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. He's also recorded solo and has produced a number of records for other bands. He plays hitman Silvio Dante in the hit HBO series The Sopranos. His syndicated radio show, Hard Rock Cafe Presents Little Steven's Underground Garage plays Sunday nights on a number of classic rock stations across the United States.   • Music reviewer Charles de Ledesma reviews the CD Outro Lado by the band Zuco 103. They are a trio from Amsterdam, headed by a Brazilian musician named Lillian Viera. She and her band incorporate the traditional musical forms of Brazil — bossa nova and samba — with electronica, funk and jazz. They are at the forefront of a musical movement in Europe called "NU Brazilian", which features this hybrid sound of European dance music and Brazilian rhythms.
