Love Lock Fence Near San Antonio River Will Move Temporarily For Walkway Repair Work

Courtesy San Antonio River Walk Association

The San Antonio Public Works Department is temporarily relocating a lovers landmark downtown.

The “Love Lock Fence” will be moved just around the corner from its present location between the Kallison Walk Bridge and Market Street so a crew can repair a walkway. Cracks and erosion were observed on the underside of the portion that supports the fence.

Public Works spokesman Paul Berry explained that the fence is located near the Courthouse Wedding Chapel and the romantic River Walk, a spot that inspired couples for years to “lock in” their love and leave a symbol for all to see.

“It became a tradtion where somebody just said, 'you know what, I’m gonna put a lock on here with our names on it, and then I’m gonna throw the key into the San Antonio River.' "

Berry said the tradition is more than a decade old. The fence is now weighed down by hundreds of locks.

The Love Lock Fence will be moved to its temporary location on Sept. 8, and the walkway will remain closed until the bridge can be repaired.
