A delegation from the House Armed Services Committee visited San Antonio Tuesday. The group is touring the nation’s troubled basic training headquarters at Lackland Air Force Base.
The congressional delegation is meeting the new commanders in charge of Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland to learn how the sex scandal at the base began and how it was allowed to continue.
The scandal investigation has led to five Military Training Instructors being convicted of crimes and Air Force violations such as rape and sexual harassment.
In August, a female commander was placed in charge of the training wing at Lackland Air Force Base.
Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., Rep. Susan Davis, D-Calif., and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., are among the group touring the facility where some 36,000 airmen from all over the country graduate from basic training every year.
Davis told reporters outside Lackland that some abuses have occurred at other bases around the country, but “not like this. It’s the power relationship between the trainees and training instructors that was a big problem here at Lackland.”
