The San Antonio City Council has begun reviewing potential rate increases from the San Antonio Water System and CPS Energy, a process that will continue until November.
The first of the meetings started Wednesday, when CPS President and CEO Doyle Beneby provided the council an overview of the utility's 4.75 percent proposed increase, which would add $5.19 to the average gas and electric bill each month.
SAWS officials have yet to make their first presentation to the council and say they are still working on a proposal for consideration, which should happen at their Oct. 1 meeting.
Each utility will go before council three times before a vote takes place.
- During the first meeting, the leaders of each entity present their revenue requirements, which includes the rate increase requested, the revenue expected, and how the revenue will be used.
- The second meeting is about changes to the rate design -- the billing structure used to bring in revenue.
- After the third meeting, the council will confirm the date that it will vote on the proposals and ask additional questions.

- Oct. 3: Rate Design Presentation
- Oct. 16: Public Utilities Supervisor Recommendation/Wrap-Up Session, CPSE Proposed Rate Request
- Nov. 7: CPSE City Council Rate Approval Request
- Feb. 1, 2014: Proposed effective date for CPSE Rate Adjustment Implementation

- Oct. 17: Rate Design Presentation, SAWS Proposed Rate Request

- Nov. 21: SAWS City Council Rate Approval Request
- Jan. 1, 2014: Proposed effective date for SAWS Rate Adjustment Implementation
