San Antonio Man Resigns From North East ISD School Board

A trustee for the North East Independent School District resigned from his position Wednesday, four months after his colleagues on the board voted to formally reprimand him for what they described as a misuse of power.

The board voted to reprimand Joseph Treviñoagain last week for missing meetings and sharing privileged information.

Treviño said he’s lost a lot of weight due to complications from an E. coli infection and is resigning to focus on his health.

“I have to focus all of my energy towards that and towards my family and towards my health. The E. coli thing, the district was made aware of it. They’ve supported me through it even though we’ve been through our differences,” Treviño said.

Treviño said he’s also decided to stop pursuing an appeal of the reprimand through the courts or the Texas Education Agency.

“It’s not worth my health. It’s not worth the unnecessary attention towards the district that I care about,” Treviño said.

North East board President Shannon Grona accepted Treviño’s resignation during a specially called meeting Wednesday. She said the board wished him well and would discuss how to replace him in the coming weeks.

Treviño represented District 3, which primarily includes the attendance zone for Legacy of Educational Excellence High School.

Trustees also voted to officially hire Sean Maika as the district’s superintendent during the meeting. Maika has been serving as North East’s interim superintendent since May.
