UTHSC Medical School Named Top Three For Hispanics Studying Medicine

UT Health Science Center

The School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center has been named one of the top three best medical schools for Hispanics in the U.S.

The national ranking came from "HispanicBusiness" magazine and honors the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio for its use of progressive programs to recruit, support and mentor Hispanic medical students.

During the 2011-2012 ranking period, 38 of 207 M.D. degrees conferred by the School of Medicine went to Hispanics, which is among the highest totals in the country.

The School of Medicine’s graduate enrollment of 889 students during the latest ranking period (2011-2012) included 175 Hispanics -- nearly 20 percent of the total. At most U.S. medical schools, Hispanic enrollment is in the single digits.

The magazine said because of the high enrollment of Hispanic students and the high number of faculty employed here, San Antonio’s School of Medicine more accurately reflects the demography of the community served by the school. The new ranking brings the School of Medicine up from sixth place, its previous ranking.

School officials attribute its success among Hispanic students to outreach programs that expose young people to health science careers, to the school’s proximity to family, the friendly environment of the San Antonio community, and greater affordability than many other medical schools in the country.

The magazine, which now only publishes online, also ranked UTSA’s College of Engineering fifth best engineering school in the country for Hispanics and UTSA’s College of Business at number eight in its category.

The 2012 rankings mean San Antonio is home to top schools in three out of the four education categories judged by the publication.

The annual "HispanicBusiness" Best Schools for Hispanics lists rank the top 10 graduate schools in business, law, engineering and medicine.
