San Antonio Philharmonic: Christopher Wilkins conducts Vaughan Williams and Holst’s The Planets

San Antonio Philharmonic: Christopher Wilkins conducts Vaughan Williams and Holst’s The Planets

San Antonio Philharmonic
Classics 4
Nov. 18 & 19
Christopher Wilkins, conductor

Christopher Wilkins returns to transport you on a musical expedition stretching from the frozen terrain of the South Pole to the infinite vacuum of space by way of the highly descriptive music of Vaughn-Williams’ Symphony No. 7, “Sinfonia Antarctica” and Holst’s masterpiece, The Planets. Vaughan Williams’ symphony derives from his score of the 1948 film, Scott of the Antarctic. To speed your journey, we will perform with a special video created by Natural History New Zealand. Footage includes aerial film of the continent, film and photographic images of historic voyages, and original dramatizations, including of the fateful Terra Nova expedition, led by Captain Robert Scott. With The Planets, Holst conjures the mythological and astrological associations of seven planets (minus Earth and Pluto, which had not yet been discovered).
