Girls Inc., San Antonio, will host the 13th Annual RockIT Into the Future Science Festival this weekend.
“It’s a free family festival that is hands-on, minds-on science. It’s one of my favorite events of the year,” Girls Inc., San Antonio president and CEO Leah Rosenhauer said.
Rosenhauer said the festival is a great opportunity for kids to learn that science is everywhere.
“It’s not just technology. It’s not just computers. It’s not just engineering," Rosenhauer said. "The scientific process of discovery, or disrupting things, of finding new solutions to things is all around us.”
One exhibit is called Touch-a-Truck, and it teaches kids about the science and technology that moved humans from horse drawn buggies to modern vehicles. Rosenhauer said the exhibit lets children get their hands on the vehicles and explore.
“Let’s climb on a tractor. Let’s climb on a fire engine. Let’s talk about the technology that’s in a police car or a DPS cruiser. Let’s bring out some really cool cars and talk about the science in the engine,” Rosenhauer said.
Girls Inc., San Antonio, sees the RockIT Into the Future Science Fair as an opportunity to encourage girls to see science in a new way, and to imagine a future for themselves in STEM professions, but Rosenhauer said she hopes boys will come and have fun, too. It’s free, and everyone is welcome.
The fair is in Mission County Park on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
