Camerata San Antonio Begins A Musical Conversation And Celebrates An Anniversary

Jason Murgo

As the weather begins to cool, San Antonio's music scene is heating up.

For example, Camerata San Antonio is in celebration mode. Cellist and co-founder Ken Freudigman explains that the group has reached an important milestone.

"It's the beginning of our 15th season here in San Antonio playing great chamber music," he said.

Their weekend performances will mark that anniversary with a special theme.

“We're doing a program called ‘Conversation,’” he explained. “It's three works by Schumann, Beethoven and Mendelssohn. These three works really have a wonderful conversation between performers and the audience. We just want to invite you in and hear us converse musically, and we hope you enjoy that."

During a recent rehearsal, the musicians took on a Mendelssohn piece.

"You're listening to the Mendelssohn Trio in C Minor, Opus 66,” Freudigman explained. “It is a wonderful, mature work. And as you can tell it has fistfuls of notes for Viktor. Viktor Valkov is our pianist, and sometimes I think he has three hands when he plays. He's just a joy to work with."

The trio for the first performances is rounded out by San Antonio Symphony violinist Matthew Zerwick.

The ‘Conversation’ performance opens up the Camerata San Antonio season.

"Yes, we have six programs coming up,” Freudigman explained. “We start here this weekend and we go all the way through next May."

That first performance is in Boerne Friday at First United Methodist Church, then on Sunday at the University of the Incarnate Word.
