Catch The Botanical Garden's Holiday In Bloom

For its Holidays in Bloom event, the San Antonio Botanical Garden is dressed up in more than just red and green. The Botanical Garden's Candace Andrews took me through the 38-acre hilltop gem.

"It's a wonderful celebration of the holidays here at the garden. It'll run through December 31st. We've got holiday horticulture for everyone to enjoy."

Autumn's come and gone, but the botanical center's myriad shades of green is augmented by multiple colors of blooms dispersed through the Garden, which is divided into thematic areas. Andrews describes some of them.

"The Conservatory has the five glass houses with exotic plants from all over the world and the exhibit room especially has those bromeliads and orchids."

The way the Gardens were laid out mimic Texas's different botanical areas.

"We have the formal gardens that we strolled through, and then of course the native area. You can take that walk across Texas, in that part of the garden, from East Texas Piney Woods to the Hill Country."

I asked her to talk about the sculptures that are placed throughout the garden.

"Yes, we've got the Jorge Marin Wings of the City sculpture exhibit, thanks to the Mexican Consulate. Eight beautiful bronze sculptures here in the garden 'til June 5th."

One display is only here through Thursday the 31st, and it's geared to the kids.

"Big Garden/Little Me. The giant checker and chess set, with quaint blades of grass that make you have an ant's perspective as you make your way through them. Giant Adirondack chairs, huge picnic table. Just a fun, engaging place for the family in the really magical setting of the amphitheater."

If your holiday guests are getting restless, Holiday in Bloom should fix that.
