San Antonio Symphony Takes On ABBA

The San Antonio Symphony has some unusual partners in this weekend’s performances.  Associate Conductor AkikoFujimoto says those partners are coming all the way from Sweden.

“The band is called Arrival From Sweden and they sing the music of ABBA.”

Arrival from Sweden is an ABBA tribute band, and they’ll be playing ABBA hits with the symphony this weekend, stretching it in atypical directions.

“It’s a very different part of our brain we use when we play pop music, but you have to be a good musician to put together a pops concert pretty fast. It tests a different part of your musicianship. The rhythm, the style, so yes—it’s a different kind of challenge.

The Tribute band has four vocalists and another eight musicians.

“They provide the vocals and they’re bringing their own rhythm section. They’re bringing quite a group and we’ll be backing them up.”

If you’re wondering whether classical music lover Fujimoto likes ABBA, wonder no more.

"The first ABBA song I ever heard was Dancing Queen. And I have to say, it’s such a great song. It’s a masterpiece in itself.”

We’ve more on this weekend’s concerts here.
