With all the Dia De Los Muertos celebrations in town, there’s one other you may have missed. Diwali extols the victory of good over evil. It also celebrates Indian culture -- the kind that comes from India. Kausi Subramanium explains:
"Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights will be celebrating its fifth anniversary this Saturday, November 2 from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. at Hemisfair Park," Subramanium said. "We will have live music and dancing -- dancealongs where our guests can participate in Bhangra, Garbha, as well as Bollywood Zumba."
Bhangra and Garbha are Indian styles of dancing, and yes, she did say "Bollywood Zumba." And there’s more:
“We have food from different parts of India, and we’ll have ten vendors with us," Subramanium said. "We have vendors who will be selling their handicrafts, jewelry, clothing. We have Henna artists, who will be with us. And the highlight of the evening is our Diya ceremony, or the floating candles, which we will be releasing into the fountains of Hemisfair Park. And we close out the evening with fireworks."
They expect 15,000 people to attend the event, which will feature food, dance and music from 15 different states of India. The celebration isn’t just confined to San Antonio.
"This is the largest holiday in India."
Diwali, San Antonio Festival of Lights happens this Saturday night.
