Marin Alsop and Sao Paulo Symphony Head to Europe in October

Grant Leighton

In October 2013 Marin Alsop will bring the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Brazil’s leading cultural export, to Europe for a 15 concert tour. The Orchestra’s most extensive European tour to date takes in Berlin’s Philharmonie, Paris’s Salle Pleyel, London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Vienna Konzerthaus, plus three dates at the Salzburg Festival.

Maestra Alsop was appointed Chief Conductor of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) in 2012. Her contract runs through 2017. Already she has taken the orchestra to Europe, in 2012, where their concert at the BBC Proms made history. This was the first time a Brazilian orchestra had performed at the Last Night at the Proms. You can see the program from that concert at the BBC Proms Archive.

The discography of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra continues to grow with the coming release of the second volume of an anticipated complete cycle of the Prokofiev Symphonies. In fact that disc will be released, by Naxos, while the orchestra is in the midst of their 2013 European tour.

James first introduced himself to KPAC listeners at midnight on April 8, 1993, presenting Dvorak's 7th Symphony played by the Cleveland Orchestra. Soon after, he became the regular overnight announcer on KPAC.
