Texans may have to buy flood insurance before getting a FEMA disaster grant

Texans who receive a disaster grant from FEMA's Individuals and Households Program may be required by law to purchase a flood insurance policy from FEMA.

Flood insurance is required for buildings and personal property that were damaged in high-risk flood areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas.

Failure to comply with the mandatory federal flood insurance requirement could make recipients ineligible for future federal disaster assistance.

Information on the National Flood Insurance Program is at FloodSmart.gov.
