Kerr County commissioners are scheduled to meet on July 28 to resume discussions on a possible property tax hike to pay for flood recovery, which has generated some local protests.
Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly said the county will have to pay for flood recovery itself, at least at first, until FEMA can pay it back.
He said the last time the county had a FEMA related event, it took two, if not three years, for the county to be reimbursed.
He added that the county will need to pay contractors for repairs right away. Lower property appraisals due to flood damage may exceed $240 million. And that too means a loss in property tax revenue.
Texas tax code allows for such a hike in the wake of disasters.
