New York City Schools Shuttered To In-Person Learning As City's Coronavirus Cases Rise

As states institute stronger restrictions to control the spread of the coronavirus, the country’s largest public school system is closing to in-person learning. New York City’s 1.1 million students will begin online-only learning beginning Thursday.

The city was among the first major metropolitan areas in the country to re-open schools to in-person classes in the fall, and at least 30,000 students had been attending. The move comes as New York City hit the 3% positivity rate that Mayor Bill DeBlasio had set as the upper threshold for in-person learning.

WNYC education reporter Jessica Gould joins host Tonya Mosley for the latest on the story.
