Wurzbach Parkway Closed Next Two Weekends For Land Bridge Work

Wurzbach Parkway, between Northwest Military and Blanco Road, will be closed the next two weekends as progress continues on a land bridge over the roadway to connect both sides of Hardberger Park.

This weekend’s closure is from 9 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Monday morning, according to the city's public works department.

The parkway will also be closed from next weekend from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

The Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge will cross over the parkway and be covered in native vegetation to blend with nature. The park’s namesake--former judge and San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger--said it will be a safe crossing for people and animals.

Hardberger said the land bridge will give park animals better access to watering spots at the park.

“Generally speaking, they got Salado Creek, but also many, many, little aquifers that also supply water," he said. "They are cut off from that water. They’ve been cut off from that water.”

He says the bridge will also connect trails on both sides of the park.

"It allows us to join all of our trail systems together so that you don't just do a half a trail and have to turn around because you've hit the freeway," Hardberger said.

It should should be completed this fall. Work started on the bridge in the fall of 2018.

The 23-million dollar bridge is paid for by a 10-million dollar donation by the park conservancy and the rest by voter approved bonds.
