New Braunfels Police say the death of a Canyon High School student is the result of an assault, and not a fight.
Police were dispatched to the Comal ISD high school at 9:27 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, Cpt. John McDonald said officers found faculty and staff tending to the victim, identified as 15-year-old Logan Davidson.
McDonald said the suspect, another 15-year-old student, waited for Davidson outside their classroom after their first class of the day.
McDonald said the suspect used his fist to punch Davidson in the head twice, which rendered him unconscious.
"During the investigation, we were able to determine that the offender and the victim, both 15 years of age, were actually in a classroom together and the bell had rung and the boys had, presumably gone on to their next class," said McDonald. "The offender waited outside the classroom when the victim exited the classroom and entered the hallway and he assaulted the victim."
Davidson was airlifted to University Hospital.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed he died Wednesday afternoon. McDonald said the offender is being held at the Guadalupe County Juvenile Detention Center. Officers have talked to the suspect to figure out a cause or motive.
McDonald stressed the altercation was not a fight and that Davidson did not have time to react.
The suspect is facing charges of aggravated assault but that could be upgraded once the case reaches the district attorney's office. Campus and district counselors are on hand following what superintendent Andrew Kim called a shocking and tragic event.
A student-led candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday evening in the courtyard by the school cafeteria.
Because the district wants to respect the privacy of the families involved, and grieving students, Comal ISD will not be allowing the media to attend the vigil.
A moment of silence will be observed before Canyon High School's bi-district playoff game against San Antonio Reagan at Heroes Stadium on Friday night.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
