Kerr County Commissioners voted to lower proposed property tax rate to provide relief in wake of deadly flooding.

Kerr County Commissioners on Monday voted to lower the proposed property tax rate from last year to provide residents with some tax relief in the wake of deadly flooding.

It's a huge reversal after some talk of a tax hike to help pay for flood recovery.  But the state has stepped in to pick up much of the tab.

Commissioners approved a proposed tax rate of 40 cents per $100 dollar valuation or two-cents lower than last year.

County Judge Rob Kelly voted no and wanted to keep the property tax rate the same over concerns over future budget shortfalls and dipping too far into county reserves.   Property appraisals took a 240-million dollar hit from the flood.

The property tax rate and county budget will be the subject of a public hearing on September 8th.
