How Much Time Do U.S. Students Spend On Standardized Tests?

President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan are meeting today with teachers and school officials to discuss ways to reduce the amount of time students spend on standardized testing. Over the weekend, the president called for making sure tests are “fair” and “high quality” and only take up 2 percent of classroom time.

According to a study by the Council of the Great City Schools, students spend 20 to 25 hours a year taking standardized tests, but it’s unclear how much time they spend preparing for those tests. Here & Now’s Robin Young takes a look at the issue with Derek Thompson, senior editor at The Atlantic.
