Texas schools placed well in the first U.S. News and World "Best Colleges for Veterans" rankings. San Antonio's St. Mary’s University ranked eighth in the West region.

Texas colleges and universities placed in two of the top five nationwide spots and five out of the top 15 in the West region.

Officials said the new rankings were developed to help veterans pursue a college education under the post 9/11 G.I. Bill.

  • #2 Nationwide: University of Texas at Austin
  • #5 Nationwide: Texas A&M-College Station

The rankings provide information on schools that offer federal benefits for veterans and active-duty service members, including tuition and housing assistance.

  • #2 West region: St. Edwards University
  • #5 West region: Abilene Christian
  • #8 West region: St. Mary's University
  • #11 West region: Hardin-Simmons University
  • #11 West region: Texas Wesleyan University

A total of 234 schools were ranked in 10 categories. U.S. News released its 2014 Best Colleges guide in September.
Other Texas schools that made up the top 24 in the West region: #16 - Dallas Baptist University, #20 - University of Texas-Pan American.
