Hill Country Youth Orchestras
Matt Evans

They're about to make some great holiday music, but it’s a group of decidedly younger musicians than most. They’re the Hill Country Youth Orchestras and their Executive Director is Matt Evans.

“We have about a 142 kids this year. And the coolest thing about all that is that all the kids attend and participate free of any registration cost.”

Evans said the nonprofit raises all costs through grants and community donors.

“We even try to scholarship [sic] a big portion of the instrument rental costs. In addition to that we also subsidize a portion of the private lessons.”

About a 100 are students in the Kerrville area, but the remaining have to travel.

“…some who even travel as far as an hour.”

They’ve got a performance coming up; tell us about that.

“Yeah, it’s Dec. 14 at the Callioux Theater at three o’clock. There’s going to be some selections from ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ there’s going to be Sibelius, Mozart.
