Mariachi Corazon de San Antonio is a yearly high school competition to find the city’s best young mariachi musicians. This year's event is at Main Plaza on Saturday, October 26.
"Those students are nominated by their mariachi director to perform and they stand out in the crowd, and they have one minute time to do performances," said Main Plaza Conservancy’s Jane Pauley-Flores. "And so the judges are not only hearing the high school bands, but they are also hearing the performance of the individual that has been nominated."
There’s also a best-of-the-best combination of mariachi players that get together and play for the public.
"They’re being groomed to represent San Antonio," Pauley-Flores said. "I can’t think of a better way to represent and showcase our city than through the youth and through mariachi."
This kind of musical encouragement can have a personal payoff for the students.
"This year out of our mariachi ensemble I have five graduating students. They all have earned a scholarship," Pauley-Flores said.
Grammy winner Vikki Carr will be at the main event on October 26.
