The McNay Art Museum mash-up lecture series returns next week and this summer's events kick off with classic cars and big hair.
"I think cars are just part of the American culture," said Larry Mills, a classic car collector. "There are just a lot of people that get really, really passionate about cars."
Mills will offer his expertise to a mash-up lecture next week. He is passionate about driving the classic works of art, and he can see the relationships between cars and theatrical makeup.
"Painted car - different colors. Painting eyes - different colors. The texture of hair - the texture of upholstery on a car. Yes, I think there are a lot of connections there," he said.
Rick Frederick, Managing Director of Attic Rep Theatre Company, will talk about big hair and stage make-up while Mills sounds off about classic automobiles.
Kate Carey, the education director at the McNay Art Museum, said the two experts will give 20 minute lectures and then open the floor to a discussion. The mash-up is meant to be a juxtaposition because, as Carey said, you never know what will happen.
"You can't predict what connections people will make between these topics. The audience can ask a question just to Larry about cars or just to Rick about hair and make-up, but if an audience member is able to make the mash-up connection and ask a question that relates to both topics, they get a prize," Carey said.
The mash-up lecture series begins next week. The next two mash-ups compare art and radio one week, and pre- and post-war fashion alongside photography the following week.
