Bexar County will soon open a new multimillion dollar intake facility for processing and detaining suspects after an arrest, but the San Antonio Police Department has said it would decline to use it.
About 60 percent of area arrests are made by SAPD, while the remainder are made by the Bexar County Sheriff's Office or one of the 26 surrounding suburban cities.
Currently, the city and the county share costsand responsibilities regarding operations. Since 2007, Bexar County's Central Magistration has been housed in the city-owned Frank Wing Municipal Court Building.
How does the current booking system work and in what ways could that process change when the new Justice Intake and Assessment Centeropens in October?
What reasons does SAPD have for declining use of the new facility? Is there potential for future use and what would need to change for that to happen?
How can the city and county work in conjuction to streamline the criminal justice system?
