The St. Mary's strip lost most of its traffic after the construction of Highway 281 north, but the late 1980s and early '90s marked the resurgence of the strip as a bar scene so prolific an estimated 15,000 turned out for an MTV promoted street party.
The partying was too much for the area though and it became a victim of its own success, with the strip fading from bar-going crowd's radar. The noise, crowds, trash, and crime that ensued during this time period has a lot of current homeowners a little worried as they see a new St Mary's strip coming to fruition with restaurants, bars and more.
Can the area learn from its past or will it fall into bad cycles again?
